A 20-year-old law student was allegedly gang-raped by her boyfriend and three of his friends in Visakhapatnam. The criminal act was recorded and the accused blackmailed her for months. Devastated by the torture, the girl tried to commit suicide, but her father managed to save her. She then told her family about the horror she was going through, and they supported her to file a police complaint.
Visakhapatnam city police yesterday said the four accused have been arrested under sections of the Information Technology Act as well as Indian Justice Code sections related to gang rape, voyeurism and criminal intimidation.
Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi said, “All four accused have been arrested and taken on remand. The victim's boyfriend and his three close friends are the accused.”
Police have said that the woman and her boyfriend were in a relationship for more than a year and he had also promised to marry her. On August 13, he took her to his friend's room and raped her there. His other friends filmed the act. Police have said that he threatened her of broadcasting the footage and sexually assaulted her.
This harassment continued for months. The woman, who was pushed to the edge, attempted suicide on Monday, but her father managed to save her in time. Then she openly told what she was going through. With the support of her family, the woman lodged a police complaint.
The opposition YSR Congress Party has attacked the TDP government led by N Chandrababu Naidu over the incident.
“A law student was gang-raped by four youths in Visakhapatnam. The torture was filmed on a cell phone and the victim was threatened several times. The victim tried to commit suicide as she could not stop the harassment of the accused. .Father saved her. How many more girls should fall victim to the incompetence of the coalition government,” it said, tagging Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Andhra Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha.
Earlier, the state Home Minister had questioned why Andhra Pradesh has been on top in terms of crime for the last five years. He said, “Leaving the existing 'Nirbhaya' law in the air, they have fooled many people by playing in the name of Disha law. Ever since our coalition government was formed, we have caught any incident within a single day. We sent him on remand.” 48 hours,” he said.
