Mumbai: The number of cadaver organ donations in Mumbai this year has reached 60 as relatives of another brain-dead man donated his organs – liver and kidneys as well as bones and skin.
The 70-year-old Bhiwandi resident, who was admitted to a local hospital following brain haemorrhage, was shifted to Jupiter Hospital in an unconscious state on Sunday evening and was later declared brain dead.
“The family immediately agreed to donate his organs and we are grateful to the family,” said a Jupiter Hospital official. Liver and kidney transplants were performed in hospital patients.
This year, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) focused on spreading awareness on bone and tissue donation, due to which families came forward to donate bone, skin besides cornea and other organs.
“We are emphasizing on the consultants to advise the relatives of the patient to donate bone, tendon and skin. Last year, after a gap of three years, the city witnessed bone donation. I am happy that we are now seeing bone and tissue donations frequently,” said Dr Bharat Shah, general secretary, ZTCC.
Donated bone is used in patients with bone deficiency or in bone reconstruction procedures. Bone and tissue donation helps people who suffer from orthopedic and neurological conditions that cause bone death and degradation.
In Maharashtra, more than 8,200 patients with life-threatening conditions are currently registered and waiting for organ transplant. End-stage kidney disease patients make up the majority of the list, followed by those waiting for liver and heart transplants. In 2022, 47 body organ donations took place in the city after witnessing a decline in body organ donations in the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, 31 cadaver organ donations took place in the city.
