Tamil Nadu braces for heavy rains, schools closed in Chennai and surrounding districts

Chennai:

All schools in 11 districts of Tamil Nadu will remain closed due to the possibility of heavy rain on Thursday. Holiday has been declared in schools in Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet and Tiruvallur districts.

It rained in parts of Thoothukudi this morning.

India Meteorological Department has issued yellow alert in many districts of Tamil Nadu.

The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for moderate rain with light thunderstorm in Vellore, Perambur, Salem, Namakkal, Sivagangai, Madurai and Dindigul.

The weather department in its latest release said light rain is likely in Thoothukudi, Tenkasi and Theni districts.

Earlier, the IMD had said that due to the western disturbance over Central Pakistan and adjoining areas, light to scattered rain is expected over Punjab, Haryana and Delhi-NCR in the next two days.

In its forecast on Sunday, the IMD predicted a cold wave to hit most parts of North India from December 9.

According to an IMD release, cold wave conditions are expected over West Rajasthan from December 9 to December 14, while Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh and West Uttar Pradesh will experience cold wave conditions from December 11.

The IMD defines cold wave conditions as a significant drop in temperature compared to normal climatological values ​​for a given location.
