Pune: Southern Command celebrates 54th Victory Day with wreath laying ceremony and flag ultra marathon.

Headquarters Southern Command celebrated the 54th Victory Day with a wreath laying ceremony at the Command War Memorial, marking India's historic victory in the Indo-Pak war of 1971. Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Army Commander, Southern Command paid tribute to the bravehearts by paying floral tributes and remembering their supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. The ceremony was attended by 1971 war veterans, serving officers, school children, NCC cadets and dignitaries, promoting a sense of remembrance and gratitude.

Celebrated every year on 16 December, Vijay Diwas marks India's historic victory in the Indo-Pak war of 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. This remarkable achievement is a testament to India's military might and strategic prowess.

More than 93,000 Pakistani soldiers laid down their arms in this unprecedented event, making it one of the most decisive military victories in modern history. This victory not only liberated millions of people from oppression but also established India as a major player on the global stage.

Adding to the solemn celebration, the 405 km Vijay Diwas Ultra Marathon organized under the aegis of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa region was flagged off at the Command War Memorial. The marathon, which started from Colaba, Mumbai on 6 December 2024, featured 15 prominent runners including veterans, school children, local civilians and NCC along with notable participants like Col Mandeep Singh Mann (Retd) and Captain Pooja Mehra (Retd) Were. Cadets from the cities along the route. The runners crossed three major cities of Maharashtra – Nashik, Ahilyanagar and Kolhapur before finishing in Pune.
