Stylish opener Smriti Mandhana extended her dominance with a brilliant innings, followed by a brilliant performance from fast bowler Renuka Thakur with the new ball, as India defeated West Indies by a record 211 runs in the first women's ODI here on Sunday. India scored 314 runs for nine wickets on the basis of Mandhana's brilliant inning of 91 runs in 102 balls.
The launch pad was provided by the left-handed opening batsman to bulk up the middle-order and so were the likes of Harmanpreet Kaur (34 off 23), Harleen Deol (44 off 50), Richa Ghosh (26 off 12) and Bose (26 off 12). Jemimah Rodrigues (31 off 19) took India past 300.
West Indies' response was modest as some of their batsmen gifted wickets to the dominant hosts. They were eventually all out for 103 runs in 26.2 overs, with Renuka taking her first five-wicket haul in ODIs. This was India's biggest win over West Indies in terms of runs.
The second ODI match of the three-match series will be played here on Tuesday. Kianna Joseph was run out on the first ball of the run chase as she struggled inexplicably to complete a regulation single from the non-striker's end, leaving captain Hayley Matthews frustrated.
Mathews was also out 12 balls later to a wide ball from Renuka, who was getting in-swing in her first spell. When young fast bowler Titas Sadhu dismissed Rashad Williams, West Indies were reduced to 11 for four and the game looked to be over.
Renuka's fourth wicket took the visitors' score to 34 for six as Shabika Ghaznabi could not connect the in-swinging ball completely. Earlier, Mandhana, who registered a score of 50-plus for the fifth time in as many innings, scored most of the runs in a 110-run partnership with debutant Pratika Raval (40 of 69).
After dropping hard-hitting Shafali Verma, India tried a number of batsmen to open with Mandhana and on Sunday it was the turn of Delhi cricketer Pratika, who batted at a strike rate of 57.97.
The 24-year-old was also dropped at mid-off when she was batting on three runs in the 10th over. Four of his boundaries came on the leg side as he swept several times.
At the other end, Mandhana entertained the crowd with her trademark shots including cover drives and pulls. India changed gears with the arrival of fit captain Harmanpreet again, who took the innings forward on time by scoring close to 150.
The pace was carried by Richa and Rodrigues who have been in top form for some time now. Left-arm spinner Jayda James was the best bowler for West Indies, taking five wickets for 45 runs in eight overs. India could have got a lot in the death overs but only 20 runs were scored in the last three overs and James took three wickets in the last over.
