Robert Lewandowski's double helps Barcelona beat Real Madrid in La Liga Clasico

Robert Lewandowski scored twice in three minutes as Barcelona beat rivals Real Madrid 4-0 on Saturday, handing the Spanish champions their first La Liga defeat in more than a year. Teenage wingers Lamine Yamal and Raphinha completed the defeat while Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe had two goals ruled out for offside in a disappointing first Clasico performance for Los Blancos, who now trail league leaders Barcelona by six points. France captain Mbappe was repeatedly outclassed by the visitors' high defensive line, angering the frustrated crowd at the Santiago Bernabéu, whose mood soured when Barcelona scored four goals in the second half.

Barcelona ended Madrid's 42-match unbeaten streak in La Liga, one game short of the Catalan giants' all-time record, adding to the sparkle in their victory.

Hansi Flick has taken Barcelona into a position of strength in just a few months and his young side produced a stunning win to show how far they have come, ending a run of four Clasico defeats.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti opted for more strength in midfield by choosing Eduardo Camavinga in place of Luka Modric, his team's game-plan was clear – defend in numbers and Mbappe with a long ball behind Barcelona's high defensive line. Or try to kill Vinicius.

This led to an intense but repetitive first half, in which Barcelona's defense caught Madrid offside on eight occasions.

Mbappe hit the side-netting and threw over, but was offside on both occasions, while Jude Bellingham made a superb save from Barcelona goalkeeper Iñaki Pena, but this was also disallowed for offside.

At the other end, Barcelona's teenage star Yamal fired a low effort past Andrey Lunin after a brilliant Lewandowski flick found the net.

Raphinha fired over and Lunin also saved from the Brazilian winger, but Barcelona were not playing with the fluidity they have displayed in recent weeks, culminating in Wednesday's impressive 4-1 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League Happened with.

Mbappe thought he had broken the deadlock when he came back and fired a fine dinked finish past Pena, but once again the forward was slightly offside and his celebration was cut short.

Despite the feeling that they were constantly putting Barcelona in danger, Madrid managed only one legal shot in the first half, when Vinicius tried to catch Pena at the near post and it went into the side-net.

Eager for more control, Flick replaced Fermin Lopez at half-time with Frenkie de Jong and Barcelona soon took the lead.

Casado slipped past Lewandowski and Madrid defender Ferland Mendy was a step behind his teammates, with Pol onside.

The 36-year-old slid past Lunin to silence the Bernabeu and two minutes later he pounced again.

Lewandowski headed in Alejandro Balde's cross to double Barcelona's lead and score his 14th league goal in 11 games, continuing their impressive revival under Flick after struggling last season.

Mbappe's second goal was ruled out for offside as Madrid struggled to find a way back and Pena blocked the former Paris Saint-Germain forward's low-slung effort.

Lewandowski missed two golden chances to complete his hat-trick, shooting against the post from Raphinha's lay-off and then lashing home after good work from Yamal.

Flick celebrated jubilantly in the dugout as Spain's Euro 2024 star Yamal stole Barcelona's third by slotting home after Raphinha fired past him.

Raphinha completed the rout with a lob over Lunin to put the Bernabeu in trouble.
