Newly crowned World Chess Champion D Gukesh returned home to a rousing welcome as hundreds of eager fans, Tamil Nadu government and national federation officials lined up to welcome him at the airport in Chennai on Monday. 18-year-old Gukesh became the youngest world champion by defeating China's Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in Singapore last week, surpassing the long-standing record of Russia's Garry Kasparov. On his arrival Gukesh thanked everyone for supporting him.

Gukesh said, “It's amazing. Your support gave me a lot of energy. Winning the World Championship is a great feeling.”

Gukesh is the second Indian after the great Viswanathan Anand to win a world title. Anand played an important role in grooming the youth in his academy here.
