Chandigarh: Punjab Police on Friday claimed that it has arrested two dreaded criminals of the notorious Landa gang after a massive shootout on the outskirts of Jalandhar and recovered seven weapons, six magazines and six cartridges from their possession.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said those arrested have been identified as Jaskaran alias Karan, resident of Kartarpur, and Fatehdeep Singh alias Pradeep Saini, resident of Phagwara.
DGP Yadav said that an intelligence was received about the presence of criminals belonging to Landa gang in the area, following which police teams launched a massive operation and traced their location near Pholriwal village. He said that during the chase, the miscreants opened fire on the pursuing police teams, prompting the police parties to retaliate. He said that during the firing, both the accused persons as well as two police officers were injured by bullets. DGP Yadav said, “More than 50 bullets were fired from both sides during the operation.”
Sharing more details, Jalandhar Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said that the arrested persons were involved in several heinous crimes including extortion, murder and attempt to murder. He said the accused persons were also instrumental in providing logistical support to other gang members and supplying weapons to criminal organizations.
Six were caught with sophisticated pistols
Meanwhile, in another development, the police claimed to have nabbed six people linked to an arms smuggling module by foreign-based smugglers and recovered 10 pistols and 10 cartridges, including three sophisticated 9 mm Glock pistols, from their possession.
DGP Yadav said those arrested have been identified as Vinod Kumar alias Rangeela, Yuvraj Singh, Surkhap Singh, Jugraj Singh alias Jaggu of Amritsar, Amritpal Singh alias Harman of Batala and Prabhdeep Singh alias Harman.
