New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has penalized two hostel students for allegedly allowing outsiders to enter their rooms, drinking alcohol and using hookah, among other violations – the combined fine amounting to Rs 1.79 lakh.

The first notice read, “12 unidentified persons were found consuming alcohol in your room and creating disturbance in the hostel premises in your absence. This behavior is a serious violation of hostel rules.” The student has been fined Rs 80,000, which includes Rs 60,000 for unauthorized entry of outsiders, Rs 2,000 for consuming liquor, Rs 6,000 for possessing induction stove and heater, Rs 2,000 for use of hookah and aggressive behaviour, interference This includes Rs 10,000. Allegation made in second notice

The second notice alleges that on December 22 and January 5 last year, several outsiders were present in the room of another student, where liquor was consumed. The student was fined Rs 99,000 – Rs 85,000 for allowing unauthorized persons on two occasions, Rs 2,000 for consuming liquor, Rs 2,000 for possessing hookah and Rs 10,000 for aggressive and disruptive behaviour.

Both the notices caution students that failure to pay the fine within the stipulated time may result in further disciplinary action, including expulsion from the hostel.

“Any future complaint or violation will result in your immediate eviction from the hostel without any prior notice,” the notice warned.

Kunal Kumar, former president of Satluj Hostel, criticized the fine, calling it an act of extortion.

He alleged, “In a university where the semester fee is only Rs 200, students are being fined Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh. These fines are being imposed on those who do not support ABVP. “

No immediate response could be received from the hostel warden on this matter.
