New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has penalized two hostel students for allegedly allowing outsiders to enter their rooms, drinking alcohol and using hookah, among other violations – the combined fine amounting to Rs 1.79 lakh.

The first notice read, “12 unidentified persons were found consuming alcohol in your room and creating disturbance in the hostel premises in your absence. Both the notices caution students that failure to pay the fine within the stipulated time may result in further disciplinary action, including expulsion from the hostel.
“Any future complaint or violation will result in your immediate eviction from the hostel without any prior notice,” the notice warned.
Kunal Kumar, former president of Satluj Hostel, criticized the fine, calling it an act of extortion.
He alleged, “In a university where the semester fee is only Rs 200, students are being fined Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh. These fines are being imposed on those who do not support ABVP. “
