"I will add my spice...": Suryakumar Yadav talks about his learnings from Rohit Sharma's captaincy

Suryakumar Yadav is a big fan of Rohit Sharma's leadership philosophy which inspires him to keep his bunch together by understanding the mindset of his players and finding balance in bad situations. Surya, who took over as India's shortest format captain after the victorious T20 World Cup campaign, admitted that he took the “Rohit's captaincy route” to spend a lot of time with his team off the field, which later Reflects his on-field performance. Apparently they have “adapted” it to the needs of their leadership.

“Winning and losing is an integral part of the game. Everyone has worked hard ever since,” Surya said when asked about India's 0-3 defeat against New Zealand on the eve of the first T20I against South Africa. -Sometimes you do well and sometimes you don't do well.” Zeeland.

Surya said, “I have learned from him (Rohit) that balance is important in life, even if you lose after performing well, your character should not change. It has to be a quality player.”

For Surya, Rohit is not a captain but a leader.

“A leader is someone who decides how his team will play in a particular format,” said the world's leading T20 batsman.

They have played together for Ranji team Mumbai and IPL franchise Mumbai Indians for nearly a decade and Rohit's captaincy style has rubbed off on them.

“I keep noticing him when I am on the field. How is his body language and how he remains calm and how he treats his bowlers, how he talks to everyone on and off the field. I know how he treats his players, what he does.” He wants from them.

He laughed and said, “I have also followed the same path because he has been successful. Obviously, I have added my own spice to it (his own ideas). It is going smoothly.”

For on-field chemistry, off-field bonding and camaraderie within the team becomes very important.

“From a leader, you expect how much time he spends to build a comfort level with his guys. I try to do the same with my guys. Even when I'm not playing, I also try to hang out with the players, have meals with them.” Small things done off the field affect the performance on the field,” said the Indian captain.

He believes that it is very important to understand the mindset of players to bring out the best in them. “You have to understand what's going on around and what's going on in their mind. There needs to be a comfort level because they have a variety of skill sets. The freedom to express themselves is very important and I want to give them that.” I am trying to.

“Whatever he has in mind, I listen carefully and try to spend a lot of time with him to understand who can perform well for me under pressure and difficult situations,” the captain said.

Surya, who made his debut during the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, did not get a chance to play more than a single Test as he has now been declared a one-format player after the 50-over World Cup last year.

Asked if he expected a Test comeback, he was precise and practical.

“My Test comeback will happen when it has to happen. I don't miss any domestic competition, be it red ball or white ball.”
