Captain Pat Cummins and top Australian spinner Nathan Lyon on Wednesday presented a signed Australian jersey to Ravichandran Ashwin as he bid goodbye to cricket. Many were surprised when Ashwin came out with India captain Rohit Sharma to announce his international retirement. Fans got a hint of this when a camera captured Ashwin and Virat Kohli sharing an emotional moment on the last day of the Test. Ashwin looked quite emotional and Kohli hugged his friend, making it clear that a big announcement was on the way after the end of the Test match.
Ever since the news spread about Ashwin's retirement, he has been wishing him all the best for his brilliant career.
In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the moment was captured when the two Australian cricketers gave Ashwin a signed Australian jersey in the hallway of the iconic Gabba in Brisbane.
Pat Cummins gave the signed jersey to India's power spinner and said, “Great mate, thanks, you've been great.”
Ashwin made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies, after which red-ball cricket became his strength. Ashwin took 537 wickets in 106 Test matches, including 37 five-wicket hauls, and scored 3,503 runs.
In Tests, Ashwin appeared in 23 matches against Australia and took 115 wickets at an economy rate of 2.71.
The 38-year-old player also holds the record for taking most wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. He took 29 wickets in the 2020-21 edition of the prestigious series.
Ashwin has many records in the longer format which are difficult to break. This spinner holds the record of being the fastest Indian player to take 350 Test wickets. He is also India's second highest wicket taker in Tests with 537 wickets at an economy rate of 2.83.
