The eternal dice of change continues in Pakistan cricket, with white-ball coach Gary Kirsten reportedly set to step down. Kirsten, who won the 2011 ODI World Cup with the MS Dhoni-led Indian team, is on the verge of ending his association with the Pakistan men's cricket team just 4 months after being given the charge, according to a report. A lot has changed since Kirsten became Pakistan's ODI and T20I head coach. Babar Azam's return as captain and then resignation and change in the selection committee are some of the matters that highlight his 4-month tenure.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, some serious differences of opinion have emerged between Kirsten and the players in the last few weeks. While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may not have directly influenced Kirsten to consider his future with the men's national team, his recent request to appoint David Reid as high-performance coach may have influenced the board. Had rejected. The PCB offered some other names as alternatives, which left Kirsten disappointed.
Although a formal decision on the matter is yet to be taken, the PCB is likely to announce Kirsten's successor in the coming days. Jason Gillespie, the outgoing red-ball coach of the men's national team, is reportedly one of the leading candidates for the role.
Keeping in mind the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, PCB may also appoint former Pakistan fast bowler Aaqib Javed as the white ball coach. Aaqib, currently, is one of the members of Pakistan's national selection committee. His work behind the scenes reportedly played a big role in the team's turnaround in the recently concluded 3-match series against England, which ended 2-1 in favor of the hosts.
The Pakistan Cricket Board recently announced the squad for the white-ball matches against Australia and Zimbabwe. It was also reported that Kirsten would not accompany the teams for those two series.
