Mira Bhayandar: Navghar police have arrested a 37-year-old crane driver and registered a case against him for causing the death of an elderly woman due to rash and negligent driving in Bhayandar on Wednesday evening.
According to the police, the incident was reported at around 5.30 pm near the Family Care Hospital located in Indralok area of Bhayandar (East).
The deceased has been identified as Rajni Kanade (74), who worked as a clerk and retired from BMC a few years ago. She lived in the same area where the incident took place. As a part of her daily routine, the senior citizen had gone out for a walk in the evening on that fateful day.
As she was crossing the road, the crane, driven at high speed and carelessly, deviated from its course at a turn and hit her from behind. The woman died on the spot after her head was crushed under the wheels of the crane. The entire incident of the unfortunate accident was captured in closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed nearby, which went viral on various social media platforms.
Navghar police have arrested the crane driver, identified as Fasad Ali Naeem Sheikh (37), resident of Kashimira, and booked him under sections 106 (1) causing death by negligence, 281 (rash driving on public way) ) An offense has been registered under. Indian Judicial Code (BNS)-2023 and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act which deals with dangerous driving.
Authorities to crack down on errant drivers of heavy transport vehicles, especially those used for construction activities, who have little respect for traffic rules and pose a threat to pedestrians in residential areas. It has been requested to enforce strict rules. Meanwhile, the accused has been sent to custody as further investigation is underway.
