Pathanamthitta (Kerala):

With crucial bypolls looming in Kerala, the ruling CPI(M) faced an embarrassment on Sunday when a campaign video of opposition UDF candidate for Palakkad Assembly constituency Rahul Mamkuttathil was briefly shown on its official Facebook page.

Initially, the district leadership claimed that it was not the official page of the party, but later clarified that the page was “hacked” to post the video and provoke controversy.

CPI(M) Pathanamthitta district secretary KP Udayabhanu issued a statement saying the party came to know about the video posted after media reports.

“Upon detailed investigation, it was found that someone hacked the page, deliberately posted the video to create controversy, took screenshots and shared it with the media,” Mr Udaybhanu said.

The social media team retrieved the page and immediately removed the video. A complaint has been lodged with cyber police and Facebook officials.

The BJP described the incident as evidence of a “deal” between the LDF and UDF in the upcoming Lok Sabha and assembly by-elections.

By-elections will be held in Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency and Chelakkara Assembly constituency on November 13, while by-elections in Palakkad constituency will be held on November 20.
