After ragging horror, Kerala says that strict action will be taken against students


New Delhi:

Officials said that senior students seen in the viral video of a terrible ragging case at Kerala College will face the most strict action. The state government has ordered an inquiry into the incident, while the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from the state police within 10 days.

Five third year students of Kottayam Government Nursing College were arrested yesterday on a cruel attack on first year students.

The arrested students are Rahul Raj, NS Jeeva, NP Vivek, Rigil Jeth and Samuel Johnson.

In the viral video, senior students were seen laughing and looked at lewd, while a junior student was tied to a bed, and a heavy object was placed on her genitals. They also pked her with a compass.

Junior students alleged that the sticky ragging was going on for about three months. Police said it started in November 2024, the first year students started their class soon after. He alleged that the seniors withdraw money from juniors on Sunday to buy liquor regularly.

The NHRC has called the incident “morally condemnable” at Kerala College. It said that the junior student told him that seniors, who are from Wayanad, Malappuram and Kottayam, “online to transfer money to juniors” and “subjected to them to physical and mental torture”.

NHRC said, “A student was allegedly threatened with a knife on his neck, while others were bound, their bodies were put in lotions and were instigated with sharp weapon wounds.” “These actions are not only morally condemnable, but also illegal.”

Health Minister Veena George said that the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) received a preliminary report from the nursing school. “This (ragging) happened to his hostel … I asked DME to send a team of higher officials, and they are now in touch. The nursing school has already suspended these students,” Ms. George said. .

The Congress -led opposition UDF alleged that the accused in the ragging case have a relationship with the Left Student Organization, SFI.

“Everyone knows that he is an SFI activist, yet he is now denying it,” the leader of the opposition VD Sathason alleged, referring to the Students Federation of India, or SFI.

In response, Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindu said that strict action will be taken against the accused in the Kottayam ragging case. The SFI also denied the charge, and denied any relationship with the accused.

Ms. Bindu said that since the incident took place in an institution under Kerala University of Health Sciences, there are limitations of direct intervention.

Police said the arrested students have been charged under the prohibition of the Ragging Act, and several sections of the Indian Justice (BNS), 2023 said.
