Kylian Mbappe scored a brilliant goal and added another as Real Madrid beat Sevilla 4-2 on Saturday to move above faltering rivals Barcelona into second place in La Liga. Atletico Madrid beat Barca on Saturday to take top spot at Christmas, after Carlo Ancelotti's side also took advantage with a comfortable home win, leaving them one point behind the leaders. Madrid coach Ancelotti said ahead of the trip to Sevilla that Mbappe's adaptation period following his summer switch from Paris Saint-Germain was over and the French forward impressed the coach with a strong performance in all competitions and his 14th goal of the season. Proved it right.
Fede Valverde also scored a superb effort from range, with Rodrigo Goes and Brahim Diaz on the scoresheet for the hosts.
Isaac Romero and Dodi Lubakio scored for Sevilla, although they were completely outclassed in what was veteran defender Jesus Navas' final game for the club.
Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 10th minute when Madrid got the ball out from behind and passed it to Rodrigo on the left flank.
The Brazilian rounded Mbappé on the edge of the area, who took one touch to take control, another to set himself up and, with his third, fired a fierce effort past the helpless Alvaro Fernandez.
Madrid's second, 10 minutes later, was even better, with Valverde firing a volley into the top corner from more than 30 yards after a short corner routine.
Ancelotti's side were in full force and the third came in the 34th minute when Lucas Vazquez crossed for Rodrigo, who finished confidently.
Sevilla counter-attacked within a minute and Romero headed home Juanlu Sanchez's cross after good work from Dodi Lubakio.
Sevilla came out strongly in the second half and Romero should have scored the second goal, but in a good position he fired straight at Thibaut Courtois.
Instead it was Madrid who extended their lead, with Mbappe delivering a superb pass for Diaz to finish clinically.
Sevilla brought Navas on after the hour mark and was applauded at the Santiago Bernabéu, in what was his 705th and final appearance for the club, more than any other player.
Players from Madrid and Sevilla joined together to give the retiring Spanish great – a World Cup winner in 2010 and two-time Euro champion – a guard of honor at the start of the game.
Navas, 39, won four Europa League and two Copa del Rey trophies with Sevilla, but his last appearance ended in disappointment for the Andalusians, who lost in the Spanish capital.
Fernandez saved from Rodrygo when Mbappe rounded the goalkeeper and passed the ball back to his Brazilian strike-partner as Madrid moved into the fifth position.
Lukebakio made a late comeback for Sevilla, allowing Madrid to end an impressive year in which they became Spanish and European champions with a good run of results.
