Mumbai: Malvani police have arrested four people for allegedly kidnapping a 19-year-old youth and threatening to kill him while demanding ransom of Rs 33,000 from his relatives.
The incident took place on December 17 and the accused Ajay Pandey, 37, Abhishek Singh, 20, Anwar Khan, 20, and Pradeep Singh, 36, all laborers and residents of Kandivali East, were caught the next day. The kidnapping was reportedly linked to a dispute over a mobile phone and the kidnappers thought the victim might be involved.
According to the FIR, Amanullah Mainuddin Ansari, who lives at his aunt's house in Malvani, had gone out on the evening of 17 December. At around 6.15 pm, his aunt Alimunnisa received a call from an unknown number. The caller said that they had taken his nephew to an unknown place in a tempo and threatened him with harm if he did not transfer the money through GPay.
Alimunnisa requested to speak to her nephew, and the kidnappers asked to speak to him. As Amanullah narrated his ordeal, his aunt tried to convince the kidnappers but they did not agree and disconnected the phone. They later contacted her repeatedly from different numbers and continued demanding money online.
Alimunnisa alleged that the kidnappers had locked her in a tempo and threatened to kill her if the ransom was not paid. Scared, she went to the police and lodged a complaint.
Police registered a case on December 18 under sections 140 (kidnapping or murder or kidnapping for ransom), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and other relevant sections of the Indian Justice Code.
