According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Dattatreya is the child of Anusuya and sage Atri. Known for her righteousness, Anusuya performed penance to obtain a son equal to Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Jealous of him, the wives of these gods questioned his virtues, and urged their husbands to test him. Angered by their demand for nourishment in natural form, Anusuya transformed the three gods into infants and breast-fed them. When their husbands asked for forgiveness, Anusuya agreed, and the Trimurti later granted them Dattatreya.
