A 17-year-old girl died in Nandyala district of Andhra Pradesh after a 21-year-old boy set her on fire because she rejected his advances. News agency PTI has reported that accused Raghavendra suffered 70 percent burns in the fire set by himself. The police have taken him into custody.
According to the police, Raghavendra had been proposing to the victim for more than three years, but she rejected his advances. The family, who lived in Kakinada district, sent him to his grandparents' home in Nandyala. But Raghavendra followed him there.
Late on Monday night, Raghavendra reached the victim's grandparents' house and knocked on the door of the room in which the girl was sleeping. As soon as she opened the door, he entered inside and closed the door from inside. He then allegedly poured petrol on it and set it on fire. Raghavendra reportedly gagged her so that she could not scream for help.
“She was staying with her grandparents in Nandikotkuru. There was some movement around 4 am and he (Raghavendra) came out in a severely burnt condition,” a police officer told news agency PTI. By then the girl It was completely burnt.” Initially, Raghavendra claimed that it was an “accident”. Later he tried to escape, but local residents caught him and handed him over to the police. Now he is undergoing treatment for severe burns.
Forensic teams visited the spot and collected samples. Police said they are investigating all aspects of the shocking incident. Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Anita V has asked the police to form several teams to investigate the matter. He has also spoken to Nandyal Police Chief Adhiraj Singh Rana on phone and taken stock of the investigation so far.
