Prithvi Shaw is definitely going through the toughest phase of his cricket career. The right-handed batsman, who was once called the “next Sachin Tendulkar”, found no takers in the IPL 2025 mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last month. The 2018 Under-19 World Cup-winning captain was being touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket, but his decline in the last few years has seen him dropped from the Indian cricket team. Shaw was also dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad before going unsold in the IPL auction at his base price of Rs 75 lakh. He is currently playing for Mumbai in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy but has failed to impress with his game so far.
Former BCCI selector Jatin Paranjape feels that the young player needs a “complete change in his mental mindset”. Paranjape shared his opinion in his column for Sportstar.
Paranjape, who has the experience of playing 62 first-class and 44 List A games besides playing 4 ODIs for India, also revealed that Shaw needs to lose some weight to get fit.
“If I were Prithvi, I would immediately evaluate and conclude that fitness is a major drawback in his game. Without it, his future in cricket is uncertain. I would emphasize on this aspect: if he weighs between 7 to 10 kg “Losing weight without losing strength would be an important start,” said the former BCCI selector.
He said, “If I were in his place, I would camp in Chennai for 10 days with Ramji Srinivasan and dedicate the next two or three years completely to this transformation. The results should start appearing in the next 45 to 60 days.” Will be done.”
Paranjape further said that Shaw will have to improve his game against spin and ensure that he does not lose his wicket easily.
“Let's talk about skill. I have often told him that he seems to be very generous with his wickets, especially against spinners. Almost every domestic spinner in India has managed to get him out. He has to be careful with his game against spin. “There is a need to re-evaluate.” He said.
