Chennai airport remained closed till 4 am on Sunday due to inclement weather caused by Cyclone Fangal in northern districts of Tamil Nadu and delta districts of Puducherry on Saturday.
Intense weather conditions led to dramatic moments at the Chennai International Airport on Saturday, as flights struggled to land amid powerful crosswinds and low visibility.
Horrifying videos of the landing have emerged on social media, with users questioning why the flights were allowed to operate in such dangerous weather conditions.
A plane was forced to abort its landing at the last minute, underlining the challenges faced by pilots during adverse weather. Meanwhile, another flight managed to fight headwinds and land safely, presenting a nerve-wracking experience for those on board.
Cyclone Fengal, which hit the coasts of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, has remained stationary near the Union Territory, about 30 km north of Cuddalore and 40 km east of Villupuram, for the last six hours.
According to the IMD, as of 5:30 am, no movement has been seen in the cyclone and it is located 120 km south-southwest of Chennai. It is expected to move slowly westwards and weaken into a deep depression over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry within the next six hours.
In response to the severe weather conditions, IMD has issued a red alert for parts of northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and southern Andhra Pradesh.
