Villagers In Telangana Call Off Protest Against Ethanol Factory

Hyderabad:

Villagers protesting against the setting up of an ethanol factory in Telangana's Nirmal district called off their agitation on Wednesday after the government ordered a halt to the ongoing construction of the facility.

The protesters, who had surrounded a woman Revenue Department officer for four hours on Tuesday, resumed their protest on Wednesday and pelted stones at the police.

There was also a war of words between BRS and the ruling Congress on this issue.

According to an official release, District Collector Abhilasha Abhinav held discussions with villagers regarding the factory in Dilawarpur mandal on Wednesday and assured them that the matter has been reported to the state government and taken to the notice of the Chief Minister.

It said that after talks, the Collector issued orders to stop construction work in the factory. A police officer said the protest was called off. A police press release said some people were detained to ensure that the situation did not go out of control.

District Superintendent of Police G Janaki Sharmila said that the police acted with restraint and did not resort to lathicharge, although stones were thrown at the policemen.

Blaming the Congress government for the unrest in Nirmal district, BRS working president KT Rama Rao claimed that the government faced defeat due to the strong protest by farmers.

Alleging conspiracy in the ethanol factory case, state Panchayat Raj Minister D Anasuya Seethakka said all permissions for the factory were given during the previous BRS regime.

Seetakka, who demanded an apology from Rama Rao to the people of Nirmal district, alleged that the BRS leader was spreading lies after giving all the permissions while in power. He said, the Congress government has now stopped the factory work.

The villagers, who have been protesting against the factory for almost a year, staged a protest on the road on Tuesday. He expressed concern over pollution and loss of agricultural land due to the factory.

On Tuesday, a revenue department official who had visited the protest site was surrounded in her own car for four hours, only to be rescued by police later in the night. The officer had to be taken to hospital after feeling unwell. Police said they foiled an attempt by some people to damage the officer's vehicle.

Police had arranged alternative routes for traffic movement to prevent disruption on Tuesday.
