Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels Virat Kohli has the track record to improve his poor form during the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia. Kohli arrived in Australia after a poor performance against New Zealand at home, where he scored just 93 runs in six innings in a crushing 0-3 defeat at home. However, Gavaskar is confident of a change, especially considering Kohli's exceptional record in Australia. Historically, Australia has been the stage where Kohli has performed brilliantly, scoring 1352 runs at an average of 54.08 in 13 Test matches. He has also scored six centuries and four half-centuries.
“Yes, I do. That's because he hasn't scored against New Zealand. He will be very, very hungry. Even in that Adelaide Test match, where we were bowled out for 36 in the second innings In the first innings, if I remember correctly, he got run out. So, whenever he has played in Adelaide, he has scored runs. Even if it's a pink ball game Ho, it is a familiar ground for him,” Gavaskar told Star Sports during an interaction.
However, Gavaskar suggested that if Kohli scores a lot of runs in Australia, he may need to watch the first few balls to calm his nerves.
“Before Adelaide, it's Perth. He scored one of the finest centuries in Perth in 2018-19. Fantastic, brilliant 100. So, when you have runs on certain grounds, you feel a bit confident. Of course “To survive in the beginning you need luck and the ball can be a bit rough, so, if he starts well, he will get big runs,” he explained.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy series will begin with the first Test in Perth on November 22. The second Test, a day-night match, is scheduled from 6 to 10 December at the Adelaide Oval. The third Test will be held at Gabba, Brisbane from 14 to 18 December.
The traditional Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is scheduled between 26 and 30 December, followed by the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground from 3 to 7 January. This series promises to be an exciting contest and a potential turning point in Kohli's career.
