The N Chandrababu Naidu government in Andhra Pradesh has launched a massive crackdown against social media posts targeting political leaders and their family members.
At least 100 police cases have been registered, 39 people have been arrested and 67 notices have been issued for social media content, which police say could incite conflict between groups.
Many of these posts have also targeted Chief Minister Naidu's wife Bhuvaneshwari, his son and minister Lokesh's wife Brahmani, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's daughters and state Congress chief YS Sharmila.
Chief Minister Naidu has asked his party members to remain dignified in their reaction to the inflammatory post.
The opposition, Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSRCP, has said 650 notices have been served to its workers, 147 cases have been registered against them and 49 people have been arrested in a week.
Mr Reddy has said that Mr Naidu and the ruling TDP have not fulfilled the Super Six promises made before the elections. He said, “Why was a 420 case not registered against you? If asked they say they will register cases and make arrests. Our party leaders, workers and social media workers including me will definitely post against you.” do.”
Andhra Police yesterday summoned film director Ram Gopal Varma in connection with posting morphed pictures of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister on social media.
The filmmaker has been asked to appear before the investigating officer next week. He has told the police that he will join the investigation.
A case has been registered against the film director following a complaint by Ramalingam, who said that the filmmaker's social media posts have undermined the Chief Minister, his deputy and his family members.
