Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's party allies ask him to resign, set October 28 deadline: Report

Canada PM Justin Trudeau

India-Canada relations have declined during the tenure of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. But now Trudeau may have to face problems from his own Liberal Party. CBC News has reported that Liberal Party MPs are pressuring Trudeau to step down as Liberal leader. The deadline of 28th October has been given.

This demand has reportedly come forward in a closed-door meeting. This meeting took place on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The MPs voiced their complaints to Trudeau, who was present.

MPs gathered for the weekly caucus meeting which occurs when the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament is in session.

A document was also presented during the meeting explaining why Trudeau should step down. However, dissenting MPs have not outlined any consequences if Trudeau fails to resign by October 28.

British Columbia MP Patrick Wheeler, who presented the document, said the Liberal Party could regain public support if Trudeau resigns. He said this resurgence would be similar to the one seen by the Democratic Party in the US after President Joe Biden left the presidential race for the upcoming elections.

CBC News also reported that there were some MPs who spoke in favor of Trudeau.

The network further said, “Fundamentally, this is something that has been simmering for some time and it is important for people to get it out. This is not a Code Red situation. The Prime Minister can certainly handle the truth.”

Indo-Canadian realities

Relations between India and Canada, two countries that previously enjoyed strong ties, soured last year when Trudeau alleged that Indian 'agents' were responsible for the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. India strongly denied the allegations made by Trudeau in a speech inside the Canadian Parliament.

India has sought credible evidence from Canada, which Canada has not yet provided.

Recently, Canada had accused the Indian High Commissioner and several other diplomats of being 'persons of interest' in connection with the murder. India recalled all these diplomats and expelled six Canadian diplomats from India.

New Delhi has expressed strong protest by rejecting Canada's latest allegations.
